J. South,
According to Henry Weincek's excellent book, "An Imperfect God", George
Washington came to oppose slavery in the closing years of his life. Had he
been king, and had the same change of heart in his waning years, perhaps
slavery could have been over and done with early in the 19th century. On the
other hand, at that point in time, slavery was beginning to stabilize in
Virginia, but was still on the upswing in the southern states. It could have
prompted the states from the Carolinas south to bolt 70 years before the
Civil War took place.
