It was Robert Carter I ("King" Carter) who "dismembered" slaves to prevent
their running away. Robert Carter III, his grandson, was the emancipator,
and I don't think R.C. III did any dismembering. By an act of the General
Assembly, doctors who cut off the toes of slaves were not held liable if the
slaves died.
