While I cannot comment on the traditional search for ancestors,
genealogy is very much alive here in St. Louis among academic
historians who have come to the belated realization of its value
as yet another research tool. I relied on the excellent website
of the St. Louis Genealogical Society, as well as printed resources
of course, to research the founding families for my forthcoming
book, Founding St. Louis: First City of the New West, and two
of my recent MA thesis students have done some amazing work
with genealogy. One of those studies has been published recently:
Sharon Person, Standing Up for Indians: Baptism Registers as
an Untapped Source for Multicultural Relations in St. Louis,
1766-1821 (Center for French Colonial Studies, 2010) and should
be available on Amazon and on the Center's website.
