Regarding Caroline County militia lists:
Among the militia commission papers in Record Group 3 in the Library of
Virginia are names of officers nominated by county courts for militia
appointments. These records are arranged by county, and thereunder
chronologically, roughly from 1792/3 to the Civil War period, and perhaps
beyond, not sure how late it contains recommendations. These names would
list officers, and not enlisted ranks. The records are now being currently
microfilmed and not available for use until completion. Occasionally, one
finds a muster roll of men who volunteered for units, and some of these
might be among the names in the Caroline County recommendations, but these
are not all that frequent.
