On 14 March 1885, the caretaker of the Old Reservoir in Richmond went
about his usual morning routine only to discover the body of Lillian
Madison floating in the reservoir. Days later her cousin Thomas J.
Cluverius was arrested for the crime. What followed was a murder trial
that captured all of Richmond's attention. Was it murder? Suicide? A
tragic accident? Was Thomas Cluverius a nefarious seducer of women or
merely another victim? These are just some of the many questions that
have no easier answers today than they did in 1885.
