A pole is a unit of measurement 16.5 feet in length, so 24 poles, for example, would be 396 feet.



The perch is a unit of area measurement equivalent to a square pole (16.5' x 16.5')...so they are saying five acres and a fraction.



The compass directions used are quadrant directions (the face of the compass is broken into four parts). Most people today are used to azimuth bearings, which run clockwise from 0 to 360 degrees. You can find converters online to go from quadrant to azimuth bearings.
