Mr. South is quite correct when he writes "both Indians and free Blacks were
co-conspirators" in perpetuating the institution of slavery. He is getting
quite close to the core truths of slavery. Slavery shattered the bonds of
race and family. "Owners" enslaved and sold their own kin. The wealth which
slavery dispensed corrupted anyone who touched it and corrupted the nation.
These are the themes Faulkner explored.
