Hi, Alyson,

Although there were a few "early" African American doctors and lawyers who trained in American medical and law schools, most received their professional degrees from historically black universities outside of Virginia. Many returned to or re-located to Virginia to establish a medical or legal practice in their communities. Because African Americans were also excluded from professional associations they established their own.

I've included a list of some of the professional schools and national associations that you might want to contact:

Subject: [VA-HIST] Virginia Women lawyers and doctors

What source/sources would be suggested to research and create a list with biographical information on early women lawyers and doctors in Virginia?
