Where one really finds the runaways is during the late unpleasantness.? It was always interesting to me to see how many slaves ran away during the war,?particularly in the Northern Neck, and how astounded slaveowners were that their "loyal" servants had showed such ingratitude (their word, not mine).? A perusal of the court records from Lancaster Co.?et similia will reveal the number of runaways and claims against the state.? And they were substantial.
