Day 1
August 14, 2012
All K-12 Virginia Educators
The Library of Virginia and the Library of Congress are joining forces to bring you even closer to the teaching power found in primary sources. Using the primary sources found at both institutions enhances the learning and analytical abilities of students in the classroom. Spend the day seeing new and different primary sources, learning how to access new resources, cultivating your own teaching materials, creating primary source activities for your classrooms, and meeting fellow educators.
The only cost to educators is for a box lunch (approx $10).
Full Conference
August 14 –16, 2012
Civics or Government Educators
Full conference attendees need to attend Day 1 to learn more about finding primary source materials and using them in the classroom. Then, days 2 and 3 of the conference will focus on the Library of Virginia's upcoming exhibition “You Have No Right: Law & Justice in Virginia." For two days, you will be immersed in the rich history of the Virginia legal system, landmark cases, and how it influences us today. After each speaker, participants will be given the opportunity to collaborate with their peers to create teaching materials for their classroom. You will leave with more information about law and justice in Virginia, new tools and materials for the classroom, and new friends and colleagues to remember for a lifetime. Note: Content for days two and three of the institute may not be appropriate for younger learners.
Eligible candidates for the full three days of the Brown Teacher Institute must be residents of Virginia, and currently working as an educator in Virginia instructing students in Civics or Government. The only cost for selected participants is a box lunch on Day 1 of the conference (approx $10).
