Elizabeth,
Sorry, but that story about the Huck Finn book was told me last summer by my
sister, a HS English teacher outside Detroit. She had used Huck Finn the
previous year (her first year back to teaching English after many years of
teaching history), and her principal told her that she was henceforth to
stop using Huck Finn because of the "n" word. She was also told to stop
using Romeo and Juliette in 9th grade because "Shakespeare was too hard". My
sister teaches in a private school with predominantly white students. I
think in 20 years, she has had only one black student in that school.
