Re: possible missing gunpowder related to Gabriel's Conspiracy, 1800, I
just uncovered one of my aged note cards that states the following:
In the deposition of James Breckinridge, Sept. 7, 1811, Botetourt
County, in re Samuel Gray vs. Thomas Rowland, administrator of Robert
Rowland, Augusta County Court Papers, in Lyman Chalkley, /Chronicles of
the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia Extracted from the Original
Court Records of Augusta County, 1745-1800, /3 vols. (Rosslyn, Va.,
1912), I, 503:/ /[partly paraphrased] Thomas told me shortly after
Robert's death that he feared some gunpowder was missing. "This happened
shortly after the insurrection among the negroes in the neighborhood of
Richmond was discovered." Thomas asked me to collect suspected slaves at
the courthouse in order to examine them. I had no reason to believe the
gunpowder had been stolen. Examination of slaves revealed nothing to
make me suspect their guilt.
