David Thelen discusses the issue of memory and U.S. history in his article "Memory and American History" [Journal of American History, Vol. 75 (March 1989): 1117-1129].
"..the memory of past experiences is so profoundly intertwined with the basic identities of individuals, groups, and cultures..."
"...the important question is not how accurately a recollection fitted some piece of past reality, but why historical actors constructed their memories in a particular way at a particular time."
