Yesterday, 26 December 2011, was the 200th anniversary of the theater
fire in Richmond that killed more than 70 people, including the governor
of the state. The citizens of Richmond erected Monumental Church on the
theater site. A memorial service was held there on the anniversary and
reported in the Richmond Times-Dispatch of 27 December 2011, for which
see http://richmondtimesdispatch.va.newsmemory.com/ for that date.
For the diary of a man who rushed to the burning theater in search of
his children, please visit the Virginia Memory section of the Library of
Virginia's Web site. At Virginiamemory.com, select This Day in Virginia
History, click open the current day's entry, and then on the calendar
click back to 26 December.
