Plantations, well it depends on where and when. The term predates the
colonization of the Americas. In fact the entire colonial effort was
referred to as "the plantation". Plantations (rubber, tea, etc,)
exist outside of the Americas. There are also iron plantations, which
contrary to popular opinion are not an industrial adaptation of the
slave based agricultural plantation of the American South. They are
an outgrowth of the Medieval manor or grange system.
