I did a search as well and only found a small mention of the flood in New York newspapers for 1836 but really nothing more. I am guessing the newspapers that would tell the story have not been digitalized and will have to pull the reels and look for the articles during the time it happened?

Have to ask the obvious. Have you been to LVA or VHS? Being it is VA there must be a number of local historical societies.
