The recent deactivation of Fort Monroe as a military installation and
its transfer back to the commonwealth has sparked debate over its future
use. While the fort's future remains uncertain, it cannot be disputed
that Fort Monroe has enjoyed a long and colorful history. See today's

the Library of Virginia.
