A couple of early novels:
[Tucker, George.] The Valley of the Shenandoah; or, Memoirs of the
Graysons. . . . 2 vols. New York: C. Wiley, 1824.
Kennedy, John Pendleton. Swallow Barn, or A Sojourn in the Old
Dominion. 2 vols. Philadelphia: Carey & Lea, 1832.
And a terrific recent entry:
Jones, Edward P. The Known World. New York: Amistad, 2003.
(This work won the Pulitzer Prize)
Crime/detective fiction set in Virginia is probably a whole category
unto itself. In addition to Rita Mae Brown's books, already mentioned,
I believe Patricia Cornwell's are set in Virginia, and there may be a
number of others, for all I know.
A Web page of novels set in Virginia would make a useful addition to
the Library of Virginia Web site, wouldn't it?
