Re: "f.m.c." abbreviations on Gilmer map of King William.
My initial guess was more "census" related and that "f.m.c." may have stood for "female male children" but "free man of color", makes more sense.
Similar assessments were often shown on maps. The best two examples, in the case of Fairfax County, are F.F. Wead's "[Map of part of Fairfax County, Virginia, south of the city of Alexandria...]" attributed a New York Volunteer Infantry regiment
( http://www.loc.gov/item/99446519/ ) and a manuscript map entitled "Sketch of eastern portion of Fairfax County, Va., June 1861 http://www.loc.gov/item/99446520/ from the Jubal Early Anderson Papers.
Both manuscript maps show information on landowners.
The F.F. Wead map shows an "S" or a "U" under personal names which may be an interpretation of political sympathies.

I've looked at the King William map. Each time the abbreviation appears it seems to be an isolated dwelling. My guess is it stands for "free man of color."

I would like to add to Mr Browning's “Gilmer” abbreviation question suggestions about the letters "f.m.c.” These letters appear frequently on the 1865 King William map, are always punctuated, written in lower case, and seem to refer to residences.
