Anne
The Spanish for much of the period were at war with various countries,
including England. The Spanish Armada, had Drake et al (and the
weather) not stopped them, were supposed to invade England and
reestablish the Roman Catholic Church and impose the Inquisition. They
were using the gold, silver, and gems they got from their American
colonies to finance the Armada as well as war in the Low Countries.
Drake and the other sea captains on the English side were using the
treasure from captured galleons to keep England English.
