A small correction to Prof. Finkelman's post: George Washington did not
give any land to the 123 slaves he freed in his will. He may have
contemplated doing so when he formulated his earlier manumission plans; but
those plans came to naught. Perhaps Prof. Finkelman was thinking of GW's
nephew Bushrod Washington, the heir to Mount Vernon, who gave substantial
acreage to the freedman West Ford, who was possibly Bushrod's son but more
likely his nephew. All of this is covered in detail in "An Imperfect God."
