Dear All:
Self-servingly, but also I hope for the issues important to this list, I append a URL for my new book, Supreme Injustice: Slavery in the Nation's Highest Court, which is now available at the Press (Harvard) or on Amazon.
The book is based on the Nathan I. Huggins Lectures I gave at the DuBois Center some years ago. My most startling conclusions focus on John Marshall personal investment in slavery and how that affected his jurisprudence and on the evolution of Joseph Story from being anti-slavery to being an apologist and ally of slavery. Every biographer of Chief Justice John Marshall claims that he owned very few slaves (a dozen house servants in Richmond as one scholar put it) and heard few cases on slavery. I have discovered that he owned more than 150 slaves when he died and had probably owned more than 250 during his life, but gave many away to his sons and sold others. I also discuss his many slave cases, not just the 2 or 3 his biographers write about. I also have in depth discussion of the proslavery jurisprudence of Story and Taney. I hope this book will lead scholars and others to rethink our somewhat benign view of the Supreme Court and slavery.

Finally, I take this opportunity to announce my new position (in the signature file below). Among other things, Gratz College has on-line MA and PhD programs in Holocaust and Genocide studies. These are broadly structured programs that would allow graduate work on all aspects of genocide, which would include New World slavery, Native Americans, and modern on-going persecutions. I am happy to talk to anyone about these programs.
