I don't know if this l add anything to the discussion, but one of my Great Great Grandmother was a slave in South Carolina. She was 12 when brought to the Islands from Guinea West Africa, in 1830. She was seasoned there and sold in South Carolina as an Island Slave. She knew how old she was, who her people were, and how long it took to get to the ship (5 miles). She talked to whom ever would listen about her experience as a slave. What some people do not realize is slavery was traumatizing, and those experiences stay with you. It is the same with the Jewish people who survived brutality during the holocaust. My mother said that our ancestor recounted her experiences as a child in Guinea, when she was loved and felt safe. That left an impression, as did the abuse she experienced as a slave. She died at the age of 97 and still recalled what happened to her as a slave.

Jeff is right on the slave narratives, but they are tricky to use since most were interviews done in the 1920s and 1930s when the people being interviewed were very old, if they had grown up in slavery, or they were still quite old but had only been very young children in slavery. As anyone knows who does an interview with someone years and years after the event, the memory is not always the best
