I have embarked on yet another Quixotic quest for information on mason's marks in the James River at Richmond. There are hundreds scattered from the 14th Street Bridge to Bosher's Dam.

Once they're all photographed using high resolution digital cameras and catalogued the hard part begins. That is attempting to identify who made them.

Are there published sources (apart from Bill Trout's wonderful Atlas series and the VCNS Tiller) that anyone might suggest? I am thinking of business records at the Library of Virginia for the hard slog part, but if anyone has identified mason's marks with a particular mason, that would be extremely useful. I'll be looking at the JR&K records, the State Penitentiary records and at the Business Directories with their associated records to see if any have them recorded.

Thanks in advance,

Lyle Browning
