Does this not reduce it all down to the semantics of partisans? Take a side, slap on a label? Washington was a traitor to his king -- or a freedom fighter in the American cause; Gabriel was a rebellious slave -- or a doomed freedom fighter( his uprising failed to get off the ground so he never actually fought anyone for his people's freedom); Nat Turner was a killer -- or a man who listened to some very disturbing voices in his head that led him to believe God wanted him to act. What makes the difference between the murderer and the soldier? (a rhetorical question)
