Hi, Alyson, Although there were a few "early" African American doctors and lawyers who trained in American medical and law schools, most received their professional degrees from historically black universities outside of Virginia. Many returned to or re-located to Virginia to establish a medical or legal practice in their communities. Because African Americans were also excluded from professional associations they established their own. I've included a list of some of the professional schools and national associations that you might want to contact: Sarah Garland Boyd Jones, MD (1866-1905) [ https://www.encyclopediavirginia.org/Jones_Sarah_Garland_Boyd_1866-1905 ]( https://www.encyclopediavirginia.org/Jones_Sarah_Garland_Boyd_1866-1905 ) National Bar Association [ https://www.nationalbar.org/ ]( https://www.nationalbar.org/ ) National Medical Association [ https://www.nmanet.org/ ]( https://www.nmanet.org/ ) American Medical Association [ African Americans and Organized Medicaine, 1846-1968 ]( https://www.ama-assn.org/sites/ama-assn.org/files/corp/media-browser/public/ama-history/african-american-physicians-organized-medicine-timeline.pdf ) Fisk University, Meharry Medical College [ https://home.mmc.edu/ ]( https://home.mmc.edu/ ) Howard University, Moorland-Spingarn Research Center [ http://library.howard.edu/MSRC ]( http://library.howard.edu/MSRC ) Lincoln University School of Law [ https://www.lincolnu.edu/ ]( https://www.lincolnu.edu/ ) Leslie Anderson, MSLS Reference Librarian Local History/Special Collections | Alexandria Library 717 Queen Street | Alexandria, VA 22314 703.746.1718 | [ alexlibraryva.org ]( http://alexlibraryva.org/ ) What's On Your Mind?
