Thanks for this surprising and intriguing angle on Virginia's ethnic
history.
In Europe, Roma people faced severe discrimination and persecution
(and, in the case of Nazi Germany, attempted genocide) far into the
twentieth century. Perhaps they still do. It is somewhat puzzling
that more did not emigrate to North America. But perhaps, as you
suggest, their numbers in the colonies have been underestimated.
