The US government did take steps towards indicting Jefferson Davis for
treason following the war (in 1867). I believe a grand jury was
empanelled in Richmond, but in the end nothing came of it. Davis was
bailed out, and eventually moved to Canada, (rejecting amnesty and a
restoration of citizenship), but later returned to Mississippi. Does
anyone know more of the details?

Have you ever wondered why Jefferson Davis and other Confederate leaders
were never tried for treason? The easy answer is that plaintiffs would
have
been laughed out of court because the right of state secession had been
taken for granted."
