Harold,
Hope you warm up and catch your breath. I remember when I had to trek my
stinkies to a laundromat. Not a fun afternoon!
Just got the first of my books by Helen Roundtree: Pocahontas, Powhatan,
Openchanacanough - Three Indian Lives Changed by Jamestown. So far it is
quite interesting, and will probably answer a lot of the questions I
previously asked on the list. So far, in the section on Powhatan, there is
no mention of any slaves.
I have read other sources that indicate some of the Virginia tribes took in
enslaved African-Americans and made them members of their tribe, thereby
freeing them from slavery. To what extent this was done, I don't know. I
know that Anita Wills of this list traces her ancestory through such an
event and in her book suggests it was a common practice. Imported slaves, it
would seem, would be quite amenable to tribal life, moreso than those born
here. My supposition, at least.
