In Virginia, with the size of slave holdings smaller than some other
places, and with larger holdings actually distributed among different
farms and quarters, it was not unusual for couples to live apart and
sometimes be held by different owners. Some slave men were also hired
out for extended periods but with the chance to visit once in awhile.
Thus it was not unusual to see slave men moving about on the weekends
to visit wives and families. They were supposed to be carrying a
pass, but didn't always.
