As Craig notes there is an act dealing with cattle and horses; however,
I believe his reference should read Volume 6 rather than volume 5.
There is an earlier act regarding this regulating of drovers and traders
of cattle within the colony (not just Augusta). It was not a tax.(There
was an importation duty (payable to the king) on horses which was a part
of this act. This is in Volume 5, Chapter XII, May 1742, p.176.
The act apparently worked, since it was renewed in Chapter XVI,
September 1744 (p. 247).
I have found no references in county records and would be interested in
any that others have found. I would think that the most likely sources
would be counties along the Carolina (or Rogue's) Road and the Great
Wagon Road in the Valley of Virginia.
