The deadline for submitting proposals for the 2022 Virginia Forum has been
extended to 31 October.

*Call for Papers*





The Virginia Forum will hold its seventeenth annual conference April 7–9,
2022, at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond. The Virginia Forum offers
an opportunity for scholars, teachers, writers, museum curators, historic
site interpreters, archivists, librarians, and all those interested in
Virginia history and culture to share their knowledge, research, and
experiences.



The Virginia Forum is interdisciplinary, welcoming work in history,
economics, politics, geography, law, literature, education, politics,
environmental studies, archaeology, and anthropology. Customary panel and
paper proposals on all such topics are invited, as are ones for creative
presentation formats such as roundtables, workshops, demonstrations, etc.
Moreover, the Virginia Forum welcomes proposals from teachers, students,
and professionals outside of the academy, as well as from scholars in the
early stages of their academic careers.



While the Virginia Forum welcomes proposals on any Virginia topic, each
year a theme is selected to inspire proposals and prompt reflection. This
year’s theme “*History Unmasked*” encourages submissions regarding the dual
theme of medical pandemic and social justice. This includes unmasking the
history represented by people’s voices, whether they be marginalized voices
of the past or resounding voices heard since 2020. We are especially
seeking proposals that spark conversations about public commemorations,
monumental representations, changing meanings of past and current
iconography, the contested interpretations of liberties and justice in
Virginia, and how past and present Virginians have experienced or endured
medical, social, and racial crises.

*Individual Papers*: Please submit a one-page paper proposal and one-page
curriculum vitae in a single Word/PDF document to [log in to unmask] by
October 31, 2021. Please be sure to include your email address and other
contact information.



*Panels:* Proposals for complete panel sessions, workshops, or any other
presentation formats are encouraged. Submissions should include: 1) a
one-page description of the whole panel or session; 2) a separate, one-page
description for each individual presentation in the session; and 3) a
one-page curriculum vitae for each participant, including the chairperson.
Please include all the above in a single Word/PDF document submitted to
[log in to unmask] by October 15, 2021. Please be sure to include all email
addresses and other contact information.



*Chairs: *At the Virginia Forum, there are not formal commenters on panels
and the chair serves to introduce the panel(ists), monitor speaking times,
and moderate or facilitate the Q & A portion of the session. If you are
interested in chairing a session at the 2022 Forum, please indicate your
area(s) of interest and submit a one-page curriculum vitae in a single
Word/PDF document to [log in to unmask] by October 15, 2021. Please be sure to
include your email address and other contact information. Past Forum
participants are particularly encouraged to consider chairing a session at
this meeting, as they are familiar with the convivial atmosphere that this
conference seeks to cultivate.



*Timeline:* Acceptances should be forthcoming by December with a tentative
schedule being announced in January 2022.





*Note on Livestreamed Sessions:* Please note that the Virginia Forum and
the Virginia War Memorial plan to livestream some of the conference
sessions for remote participants. *If you are not comfortable participating
in a livestreamed session, please indicate that clearly in your proposal.* This
is for informational purposes only to help the program committee organize
sessions and indicating such will have no bearing on its decision to accept
or reject your proposal.
