The number of enslaved Africans in Virginia grew very quickly after the
arrival of "20, and odd Negroes" in 1619. A group of records recently added
to Virginia Untold, containing over 20,000 names of enslaved individuals,
illustrates the proliferation of enslavement in the commonwealth. Read more
