I've been following the recent thread regarding Virginia seaman, but my interest is specifically 29 August 1699 regarding the HMS Shoreham under Gov. Nicholson capturing the pirate, Lewis Guitar, in Lyn-Haven Bay. Thomas Lacy II was a son on my immigrant, Thomas Lacy I, who settled in New Kent County (later Hanover County) about 1680.
Off and on over the last 4 years we have searched (literally) hundreds of pages in the VSL Colonial Records but with no usable results. That is, we cannot pinpoint the trial transcripts of the witnesses against Lewis Guitar, captain of the La Paix.
We located certificates awarding Lacy and Woolgar each 5 months pay for volunteering to serve since they were not assigned to the Shoreham. The certificate noted they were both AB Seaman. This note, however, does not tell us whether they were American or British seaman.
The ship to which they were assigned, being small and not heavily fortified, under order of the captain left the area while Lacy and Woolgar were off duty. Thus, for their bravery, they received the additional pay.
If anyone can help us "fine tune" our research to locate these trial transcripts we will appreciate it greatly.
