The National Parks Service web site for Civil War Soldiers and
Sailors gives state counts but only attributes them to the number of
records found and does not claim to have final totals.

NPS shows 2,598 Union and 281,205 Confederate records in the system.
You can search for individuals and view brief unit and battle histories.

The url for the site is: http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/

Counts by state are available at: http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/
info.htm
