Yes, I concur.   But my central query, about Jefferson’s very conception of UVA, is still unresolved, I think.



Let me add that In McInnes and Nelson, Thomas Howard and Alfred Brophy cite in “Proslavery Thought” an 1850 speech by Muscoe R. H. Garnett where he asserts what they call “a surprising claim about the origins of the university,” that Jefferson “designed the University to avert it [fallling into Northern thinking that slavery was evil].”



They are at first cautious—“If Garnett was right about Jefferson’s intentions…” (p. [141]), but then note that “Garnett’s address highlighted one important feature of the many goals Jefferson had for the University of Virginia…” (p. 142).



This is the know I’m trying to untangle, what Jefferson’s intentions for UVA were, something some very distinguished historians seem to differ on.
