Let me see if I can list ten
1) It was the first landing site of the earliesT Englishmen to settle in
North America.
2) It was the first landing site of the earliest Virginia explorers.
3) It was a site important to Indian culture and defense prior to its
adoption by the Englishmen.
4) It has continously been a military location since before the country or
the state was established.
5) The military may have mistakenly turned it loose, and may need it back
again, preferrably without buying back a lot of private property - it is
just a good defensible position.
6) The tidewater area is already far too developed for its available
resources. Limiting development by preserving open space will help conserve
the limited water and other resources.
7) The area is a treasure trove for archeological digs that can be spread
over unlimited time by not concreted over the vast stretches of property. No
only will the site yield evidence of first occupants, but also concrete
evidence of the four hundred years of euro-occupation of the land.
8) Use of the land as a designated historical site will preserve the old and
precious buildings where out history took shape, and use of the adjoining
land as park area will allow development of land, water, and beach
recreational resources which may be privitized or not as desired down the
line.
9) Slavery facts can be provided a collection place among the buildings to
be preserved.
10) Revolutionary War and Civil War facts and artifacts can be provided a
collection place among the building to be preserved.
11) Native American facts and artifacts can be provided a collection place
among the buildings to be preserved.
Ooops, I made it to 11..
