By commoner, I meant merely that George Washington -- whatever superior qualities he possessed -- lacked an aristocratic title; gentry are not automatically part of the nobility.  And anxious American conservatives, intent on stabilizing and ordering their society, would have passed over a commoner in favor of someone with clearly noble blood.
