In 1933, Cab Calloway was singing about the "Reefer Man," and marijuana
had made its presence known in American pop culture. By the mid-1930s,
propaganda films warned that marijuana use would lead to violence,
despair, and insanity. The Casablanca of these films was 1936's Reefer
Madness, which showed teen use of the drug resulting in manic laughter,
manslaughter, and suicide. Today's blog entry shows how fear of this
reefer madness had reached Petersburg in May 1936.
