Dear colleagues:
As this thread makes clear, Jefferson will continue to provoke lively
debate, as well as a seemingly endless stream of publications, among
historians of all backgrounds. It's thus all the more gratifying to
find a recent book intended for a general as well as an academic
audience that manages to sum up so much recent scholarship while
conveying the kind of concise information Professor Maass requested in
his original query: R.B. Bernstein's brief biography entitled simply
"Thomas Jefferson" (New York: Oxford University Press, 2003; Library of
Congress call number E332 .B47 2003 and now I believe available also in
paperback).
And in case you were wondering: no, I have never met Mr. Bernstein.
