I am interested in the first use of the word VIRGINIA to describe the
colony in the new world.
Capt John White’s daughter gave birth in 1587 - during a Walter Raleigh
expedition - to Virginia Dare, the first English child born in America.
In grade school I learned that she was named for Elizabeth, the Virgin
Queen.
The recent discourse on Thomas Harriot stated that in 1586, he wrote /A
Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia/ which was
published in 1588.
Does someone know definitively the earliest known written reference to
the term VIRGINIA?
Thanks - Judith B. Gabor
