For the text of the constitution of 1864 (the so-called Alexandria Constitution), see Francis Newton Thorpe, comp., _The Federal and State Constitutions, Colonial Charters, and Other Organic Laws . . ._ (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1909), vol. 7, pp. 3852-3871. For secondary discussions, see Charles Ambler's biography of Francis H. Pierpont and my book on _Republicans and Reconstruction in Virginia, 1856-70_. These sources don't omit the 1864 charter.
