Do you have any documentation or other evidence that Virginia authorities
were notified of the marriage taking place prior to the later date when the
marriage was celebrated again in Virginia.  Unless someone made them aware of
the marriage in North Caroline the Virginia authorities likely had no way of
knowing that the lady had remarried.
