The Virginia Civil Rights Memorial will be dedicated on the grounds of the Virginia Capitol on July 21 at 10:30 am near the Executive Mansion. This is part of a two day event featuring a seminar on Sunday, July 20 from 3:00 to 5:30 pm at the Library of Virginia. Speakers and participants will include Virginia Tech Professor Nikki Giovanni; author Janice E. Hale, PhD; Andrew Heidelberg, who is a member of the Norfolk 17 and Brown v. Board of Education Scholarship Committee; Cheryl Brown Henderson, president and CEO of the Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence, and Research; Elaine Jones, the former president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund; Congressman Bobby Scott; and John Stokes who was a 1951 student and participant in the Moton School Protest and a plaintiff in Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward County. The unveiling of the monument on Monday, July 21 will conclude the events. It was created by sculptor Stanley Bleifeld and features 18 bronze figures around a large granite base.
