Mennonites were involved in antislavery activities from the beginning. A
very early (1688) protest against slavery by some Germantown (PA)
residents is attributed to Quakers and Mennonites. A good many Quakers
owned slaves or participated in the slave trade in the 18th century
before the denomination shifted to a strong antislavery stance; very few
Mennonites owned slaves in any period.

ps. There are some studies (by Jon Sensbach) of a different German
pietist group, the Moravians, and slavery in the American colonies.
