Maybe we should let Cornwallis have a say. He wrote on June 30, 1781: "I
will not say much in praise of the Militia of the Southern Colonies, but
the list of British Officers and Soldiers killed or wounded by them since
last June, proves but too fatally that they are not wholly
contemptible." (PRO CO 5/102, p. 506)
