Ethnocentrism, or sociocentrism, is as old as mankind.
 
Margaret Mead maintained it was one of three universals among all humans;  
the other two being a belief in some type of god and the incest taboo.
 
To the extent that racial groups in a society attempt to forge a separate  
identity from the rest of society, racism via ethnocentrism or  sociocentrism 
will continue to exit.
