One of the books I just mentioned, Paul E. Lovejoy's classic overview 
Transformations in Slavery: A History of Slavery in Africa (rev. ed. 
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2000; Library of Congress call 
number HT1321 .L68 2000), is I think still the best starting point for 
learning about the history of African slavery.
