It is conceivable that some members of this history forum would want to see
this Fort Monroe message that I circulated this morning. Thanks.

Concerning post-Army Fort Monroe, no Virginia leader has ever proclaimed
anything remotely like yesterday's impassioned declaration from Governor
McAuliffe that the preposterously split national monument (depicted at
FortMonroeNationalPark.org) must be unified.
However, unification will be opposed by the selfish special interests that
distorted the Fort Monroe judgment of his predecessors in both parties. I’ve
seen early, distant hints of it already.
So I hope friends of Fort Monroe—Facebook users in particular—will spread
the word enthusiastically. The Facebook page Save Fort Monroe shows the
attached photo [[omitted, of course, for the Virginia History forum]]
together with this:
QUOTE
Gov. McAuliffe declared: "We shouldn't be cutting up Fort Monroe—it should
be a continuous park, so people can enjoy it. I will not rest until we get
it done." He was responding to friends of Fort Monroe who had come to a Dec.
2 public event to encourage him with signs like the one pictured.
UNQUOTE
Further excerpts from Governor McAuliffe’s declaration:
* This is such a treasured asset that we have in the Commonwealth of
Virginia. I have never felt that we have done what we need to do to take
Fort Monroe to the level that it should be at. This could be not only one of
Virginia's greatest treasures but one of America's greatest treasures.
(Interrupted by applause and a shout of “Amen!”)
* We're making some great progress and hopefully we'll have some very
important news, but we're pushing everybody as hard as we can including the
federal government to get some resolution on this and we're pushing full
speed ahead.
