The Virginia Historical Society is offering a series of classes called
Recording Oral History: Technology and Techniques. The Verizon
Foundation is generously funding this series to be held on four nights
this fall: September 4, 11, 18, and October 2, 2008. These are all on
Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at our facility at 428 N.
Boulevard in Richmond, Virginia. Two weeks were purposefully placed
between the two last classes to allow students to record an interview to
share with the class on October 2. The classes are open to teachers,
genealogists, and family historians as well as college and graduate
school students. We will tap the oral history expertise of local oral
historians in discussing effective interviewing skills, legal issues,
administration of an oral history program, the varied uses of
interviewing, and the different types of recording methods, techniques
and equipment with the able assistance of Dr. Doug Boyd of the
University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY. People can register at
www.vahistorical.org and click on the "News and Events" page. Members
of the society will be charged $110.00, and nonmembers will pay $125.00.
